O primeiro foi caracterizado pela suplementacao, no pasto, com silagem de milho a vontade e dois niveis de concentrado (tratamento A: 0,740 kjg de farelo de soja, por animal, por dia, e tratamento B: 0,370 kg). O segundo periodo teve inicio a 17 de outubro e foi caracterizado pelo uso exclusivo de pasto e minerais (tratamento C); pasto, minerais e 1,0 kg de farelo de soja a partir de fevereiro (tratamento B), e pasto, ninerais e 1,0 kg de farelo de soja durante todo o segundo periodo (tratamento A). Os animais experimentais foram 72 novilhas mesticas (HZ), com idade de quatorze meses e peso vivo medio inicial de 212 kg. Ao final do primeiroperiodo experimental, foram retiradas, aleatoriamente, doze novilhas de cada tratamento do periodo de seca, para formarem os tres tratamentos do periodo de chuva. Nao houve diferenca significativa (P>0,05) entre os ganhos medios diarios de peso vivo durante o periodo de seca. Durante o periodo de chuva, o melhor (P<0,05) ganho foi o dos animais que receberam suplementacao durante todo o periodo experimental. O tratamento que proporcionou melhor (P<0,05) idade (600 dias) a epoca do peso de cobricao (320 kg) foi tambem o de suplmentacao completa nos periodos de seca e de chuvas. |

Although tropical forests harbour most of the terrestrial carbon and biological diversity on Earth they continue to be deforested or degraded at high rates. In Amazonia, the largest tropical forest on Earth, a sixth of the remaining natural forests is formally dedicated to timber extraction through selective logging. Reconciling timber extraction with the provision of other ecosystem services (ES) remains a major challenge for forest managers and policy makers. This study applies a spatial optimisation of logging in Amazonian production forests to analyse potential trade-offs between timber extraction and recovery, carbon storage, and biodiversity conservation. Current logging regulations with unique cutting cycles result in sub-optimal ES-use efficiency. Long-term timber provision would require the adoption of a land-sharing strategy that involves extensive low-intensity logging, although high transport and road-building costs might make this approach economically unattractive. By contrast, retention of carbon and biodiversity would be enhanced by a land-sparing strategy restricting high-intensive logging to designated areas such as the outer fringes of the region. Depending on management goals and societal demands, either choice will substantially in uence the future of Amazonian forests. Overall, our results highlight the need for reevaluation of current logging regulations and regional cooperation among Amazonian countries to enhance coherent and trans-boundary forest management.
